5 Things to Do in Nashville

This year for Spring Break I took a quick trip to Nashville. Life got in the way and I never got around to writing this post, but today I’m finally getting it done! I am sharing with you five things to do in Nashville. Nashville is known for her rich music history, but this city has so much more to offer. Here, in no particular order, are five things I think are worth doing on your next trip to Nashville.

1. Eat Hot Chicken

This first one is an absolute no-brainer. Hot Chicken is synonymous with Nashville. I mean… if you didn’t have hot chicken did you even go to Nashville?! There’s no shortage of hot chicken joints in Nashville, but I recommend the top rated Hattie B’s Hot Chicken. The portions are hefty and the food is delicious, so be prepared to wait it line. I promise you, it’ll be worth it! If hot and spicy is not your thing, no worries, with four levels of heat ranging from Southern (no heat) to Damn Hot (Fire Starter) you’re sure to find something to suit your taste buds. You can order your chicken by the piece, or you can opt for tenders, wings or the hot chicken sandwich. And did I mention the sides?! They have the expected fries and coleslaw, but they also have greens, baked beans, black eyed pea salad, and pimento mac and cheese to name a few. They serve beer and have a dessert menu, which I hear is quite tasty, but I wouldn’t count on having room for dessert.

2. Explore Downtown Nashville

If you’re looking for the action in Music City, downtown is the place to go. No matter the time, downtown Nashville is bustling with activity. The streets are lined with restaurants, shops and bars. And yes there is no shortage of live music. While you are there be sure to check out some of the concert halls and museums dedicated, of course, to country music.

3. Visit Centennial Park

Also located downtown is one of my favorite stops, Centennial Park. This 132 acre park is billed as Nashville’s premier park and in my opinion it definitely lives up to the hype. This park features walking/jogging trails, dog parks, art and activity centers and more. The centerpiece of the park is a full scale replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece that features a sculpture of Athena that stands more than 40 feet tall. The Parthenon was originally constructed in 1897 as a part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition and serves as an art museum featuring a permanent display of American art from the Cowan Collection.

4. Have Doughnuts from Five Daughters Bakery

When I discovered there was a Five Daughters Bakery in Nashville, I immediately added it to my must do list. My sweet tooth would not allow me to do otherwise. This family owned business is known for their croissant-style 1000 layer doughnuts which are unlike any you’ve ever had before. They have several staple flavors to choose from as well as monthly seasonal favorites and vegan varieties. Go for the amazing doughnuts but don’t forget to take a few pictures before you go as this location is majorly Instagram-able.

5. Visit the River Front

One of my last stops in Nashville was the river front and the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge. This is a prime location to spend some time outside and see the city away from all the hustle and bustle. A great spot for a quiet stroll, the bridge itself is quite beautiful and provides for amazing views of the river on either side. Don’t forget to snap a few pictures while you’re there.

This was my first time visiting Nashville and I hope that it won’t be my last. I was able to squeeze in quite a bit during my few days there, but I still have a list of things I’d like to do upon returning to the Athens of the south. If you’ve been to Nashville before I’d love to hear what you enjoyed most about this city. If you haven’t visited before, leave a comment and let me know where your first stop would be.
